This is a truly unique place to spend the night, with the original fire place panoramic views of the Garvie mountains and Native forest below.
Originally built by the Chinese Gold Miners during the construction of the water race in the 1890's and reconstructed in 1990, The Mud Hut is the only building of its type that may be stayed in overnight.
It’s a rustic experience with yes - another outdoor bath (we love those baths!).
From here, it’s straight onto 2,000 hectares of nature’s playground – cycling or walking part of the second longest water race in NZ, hand restored by Tom with historic markers and a map to guide you. It’s a never-to-be forgotten experience!
Jeep and Walking tours, Farm Dog Shows, Mountain Biking and food options are also available at Welcome Rock.

History
Originally built by the Chinese during the construction of the water race at the end of the nineteenth century
Reconstructed in 1990
Made of sod mud bricks
Located on the Eastern side of the Roaring Lion Trail (refer to map) approximately 9km from the Ski Hut
Bed Layout
Sleeps up to four people in bunk beds
Guests sleep top to tail with two people on the top bunk and two people on the bottom bunk
Facilities
Open fireplace with wood provided
Two burner gas element (with gas)
Basic Pans for cooking with
Utensils, Cutlery, Plates, Bowels, Cups, glasses
Outdoor bath heated by wood burner (takes an hour to heat)
Long drop toilet located near the hut
Pillows are provided (x4) please cover with your own pillowcase
