Just under Welcome Rock sits the Slate Hut, our newest hut which offers shelter, an outdoor cooking area and bath at 1100 metres above Sea level
Watch the sun setting over the Mataura Valley and Eyre Mountains with extraordinary views, under a towering natural schist rock formation in the shape of a Falcon.
It’s a rustic experience with yes - another outdoor bath (we love those baths!).
From here, it’s straight out onto 1,000 hectares of nature’s playground – cycling or walking part of the second longest water race in NZ, hand built by Tom with historic markers and a map to guide you. It’s a never-to-be forgotten experience!
Jeep and Walking tours, Farm Dog Shows, Mountain Biking and Hiking options are also available at Welcome Rock.

About the Hut
A cosy hut perched on the ridge line at 1,000m
Positioned near the highest point of the trail, just south of Welcome Rock (refer to map) approximately 2km from the Ski Hut
